A number of controlled field trials, comparative tests and commercial experience confirm that the ZX101C is providing a safe indication of the octane rating of unleaded motor fuels and of the cetane rating of all diesels. Both repeatability and reproducibility are slightly better than those for the well established WAUKESHA Knock CFR Research and Motor Engine as forecasted by the Research ASTM D2699 and Motor ASTM D2700 Methods. Results are traceable to official knock engine laboratory.
In unleaded gasoline, the light is absorbed at specific known wavelengths. The new instrument utilise the transmittance measurement by Near Infra Red (NIR) Spectroscopy. The NIR portion of the spectrum is where the wavelengths of light are slightly longer than can be seen by the human eye.
The ZX101 patented solid state optical system uses 14 fixed narrow band-pass filters mounted in front of NIR emitting diodes from 893 to 1045 nm, a silicon detector system with a scan speed of 10 scans/sec. and a fully integrated microprocessor to allow a spectrum of NIR energy to be derived without any moving parts, lightbulbs, or other failure prone devices.
He background signal is sampled both before and after the dual-direction absorption spectra of the sample. Such measurements do not require sample preparation and do not damage the sample being measured. A NIR measurement requires a stable light source, a means of selecting the desired wavelengths from the light source, an enhanced silicon detector to measure the light before and after it illuminates the product and a built-in microprocessor system to convert the detector output to octane rating.
The ZX101 is the only NIR analyser which combines all these features with direct measurement, improved portability, user-friendliness and low cost.
All major fuels company are equipped with the ZX101 (ESSO/EXXON, MOBIL, SHELL, TOTAL, NESTE/FORTUM, PLOCK REFINERY, IMPERIAL OIL, PETROCANADA, CALTEX, AMOCO, ASHLAND PETROLEUM, CLARK OIL, DIAMOND, MARATHON OIL, SUN, etc.).
